Here’s the trailer for the Coen brothers’ new movie GAMBIT
Like so many other people in my industry, I am generally a very big fan of the Coen brothers’ work. They’re expertly written, phenomenally acted, and interestingly shot. All in all I usually love everything they do. And, they have a knack for A) casting each role PERFECTLY, and B) casting actors in roles that I would have never imagined would work.
Case in point with their new film Gambit. The idea of Alan Rickman in a Coen brothers film just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside. THAT I can get behind. Fuck yeah. Even Colin Firth! He really does have excellent comedic timing. But my ability to truly be on board with this film hinges solely—as it so often does when she is involved—on the decision to cast a fug ass clown like Cameron Diaz. She, much like Anne Hathaway, has the constantly frustrating ability to place herself in movies that I want to see despite HER (Bad Teacher, The Holiday, In Her Shoes, etc). I would have never put her in a Coen brothers film. I just don’t think she has the chops to handle the farcical dialogue, the manic pacing, the absurd character idiosyncrasies that their films tend to have. This film is only written by the bros, but that still holds a lot of weight in my opinion.
So I go into watching this trailer knowing full well I’m going to be annoyed with her right out of the gate. But to what extent this time? Well, considering her GOD AWFUL accent and her role as a “cowgirl,” you can imagine. I don’t know if I can handle a feature length film where she speaks like a backwards hillbilly interpretation of a Southern woman. I mean dear god I really just don’t know if I can do it.
Does this look like a Coen masterpiece? No. Not at all. It looks like fun though, which is enough (sometimes).
That being said, I know I’ll see this film regardless of stupid Diaz. And you probably will too.
